The Before.
Before renovations, the space was dark, cluttered, and overwhelming. The previous owner had multiple pets and the scent was pungent. Goal number one was to remove the carpet and hope to neutralize the smell of the space. With lots of labor, time, and money, I discovered the original hardwood floor underneath the carpet was going to have to be refinished. The pet stains looked like murder scenes, and that’s not my vibe. This unfortunately was NOT in the budget, but my dear old mom pitched in to make it happen. Saint.
Thankfully even though the home is older, built in the 60’s, the primary bedroom does have plenty of storage, with two large closets. Great for a single girl- a winter and summer closet. Perfect.
The Vision.
Prior to moving in, I got to work on a vision board. Vision boards are an absolute must to be able to really see the space come together. I never recommend winging a space, purchasing items as you go. While you might fall in love with one piece, the next piece you adore might not “work” with the other item you chose. A vision board is a great way to plan ahead both in the design, as well as the budget. Stay tuned for a future blog post about how to create your own. I prefer to use Canva, it’s free and very user friendly.
The floor length mirror is both beauty and function, my favorite combination. Mirrors reflect the light, which helps this one window cave brighten immensely.
Placing the bed in front a window is typically a design faux pas, however my options here were extremely limited. I opted to add tall velvet curtain panels to make the window seem larger and to distract your eye.
I partnered with Under the Canopy to get my big girl bedding of my dreams. It’s silky and buttery soft and so minimalist that I have now become a “bed maker”. Here’s to adulting!
A few hanging plants round out the corner well and remind me of life in the morning.
A formerly owned vintage dresser, with yet another vintage mirror anchors the wall across the bed. I was worried about mixing the old and new walnut stains of the bed and dresser, but somehow IT WORKS! Praise!
