In this week’s blog, I’m sharing the remarkable transformation of my single dad client, Adam.
Adam moved into his newly purchased home in the Austin area with zero furniture inside of it.
He bought the house but moved into rooms full of “real estate white” paint that were empty of…just about everything else.
Adam was getting a second chance to create a home that captured his style—not just what his previous partner liked.
And after all, the last time he chose home decor for himself was when he picked out those navy bed sheets, back when he was single in his mid-20s.
Okay, maybe not but it definitely *feels* like it’s been that long. Here were some of the big things we focused on when we worked together:
-
Adam wanted his teenage daughter to experience a sense of safety in their new home with them, instead of like they were being shuffled between houses
-
He had me design the living spaces to meet him and his children’s needs and to have something to look forward to when it was their turn to stay
-
How to make the house feel “finished” and complete when he gave his kids their big reveal, despite only recently moving in.
This was one of my favorite projects from over the years, not just because I got to design in a different style for his teenager.
Without the Paris decor, lava lamps, or signature teal blue wall paint.
What I loved most about this project was how Adam’s daughter will no longer feel like she’s constantly picking up her life and packing it into a suitcase.
How she now has a soft place to land—that’s entirely hers—where she can retreat and feel more at home, even if her life is split between two parents and two households.
