In this week’s blog, I want to talk to you about my clients, Melanie and Tony.
They’re a D.I.N.K. household (Dual Income No Kids) with two dogs, a cat, and a new house they built out in the country.
Only problem? Their house came brand new and out of the box with NO color. In other words…a blank slate.

Every corner of their home was white-washed, sterile, and straight out of the box

Their fun-loving funky character showed up in their personalities but none of the furniture they moved in with

They had certain items—like vintage records—that they wanted to display, not keep stored away

I also learned that Melanie and Tony were what you might call “edgy” and out-of-the-box.
Tony has a nose ring and Melanie (who’s originally from New Orleans) goes back home to visit Mardi Gras every. single. year.
And if you’re wondering the answer is Yes, I want to be their friends IRL.
Their Pinterest Board
What I gathered from their Pinterest Board was an eclectic, colorful, curated feeling. At Cultivate Your Space, we always start with how you want you want your space to feel. What is the intention and purpose of the space, prior to how we ant the space to look. With a new build, adding character and charm can be tricky, but I think we managed quite alright in the end!
The Vision
So when it came time to make their new build more aesthetically pleasing, I made sure that:

We created a fun nearly lime-colored wall in their living room that also showed off their TV. This wood slat wall was made with 1 x 2 wood pieces hung floor to ceiling with 1″ gaps. We painted behind the wall and all of the slats in Sherwin Williams Rural Green. This color is truly one of my favorites of all time.

Their more eclectic collectibles—like their fine china that features curse words—were out and on display. We did a super fun peel and stick wallpaper from Otto Studio to the back of the glass cabinets. While some might prefer a simple, clean look to their displays, not Melanie and Tony, bright and unpredictable is more their jam.

They had plenty of spaces for guests to lounge, like when they stop by for crawfish boils and other gatherings. To suit their personal needs, we opted for a double chaise lounge. The room was plenty large enough for this incredibly cozy 14′ long sofa. It even has storage in the chaises for function! Melanie and Tony wanted a couch where they could both lounge and not fight over comfort. This Crate and Barrel sofa did just the trick.
