One of the questions I get asked most is how to add more storage without making a home feel cluttered. Whether you live in a small apartment or a larger home that’s simply run out of space, the answer usually isn’t buying more bins. It’s about making better use of the space you already have.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to create more storage while keeping your home feeling beautiful and functional.
Use Your Vertical Space
The biggest missed opportunity I see is unused wall height.
Instead of relying on bulky furniture, think about how you can use your walls. Floating shelves are a great way to add storage without taking up valuable floor space, and they can double as a place to display books, artwork, or meaningful objects.
The top of your closet is another area that’s often overlooked. Adding stackable bins, an extra shelf, or simple organizers can dramatically increase storage without making the room feel crowded.
Don’t Forget About Hidden Storage
Some of the best storage is the kind you barely notice.
Look for underutilized areas like underneath your bed. Storage drawers, baskets, or lift-up storage beds can hold seasonal clothing, extra bedding, or items you don’t need every day while keeping them easily accessible.
Buy Furniture That Works Harder
When you’re shopping for furniture, think beyond aesthetics.
A nightstand with two full drawers will almost always be more functional than one with an open shelf. The same goes for coffee tables with hidden storage, storage ottomans, beds with built-in drawers, or dining benches that lift open.
I always encourage clients to ask, Can this piece do more than one job?
Choosing furniture that serves multiple purposes helps reduce clutter while making the most of every square foot.
Think in Layers
Creating more storage doesn’t always mean buying something new. Sometimes it’s as simple as adding another shelf inside a closet, stacking storage boxes, or using shelf risers to maximize the space you already have.
Small changes like these can make a surprisingly big difference.
The Goal Isn’t More Storage
The goal isn’t to fit more stuff into your home. It’s to create storage that’s easy to access, works with your daily routines, and helps your home feel calmer instead of more cluttered.
When storage is thoughtfully integrated into your space, your home becomes easier to live in and more enjoyable to come home to.
